My Long Story

First Franklin

No photo. No place of birth. No civil name.

First Franklin exists where he is needed – and disappears when the cameras arrive.

He was not born. He was made – in the fragments of failed states, in the marginal notes of erased histories, in the silence between two mortar rounds. His biography is not a list of degrees or awards. It is a list of places he cannot forget.

He was there:

· In Sarajevo, when a baker carried the child out of the sniper's line

· In Baghdad, on the banks of the Tigris, no longer black with ink but red

· In Hebron, when the boys still played football

· In Florence, before the Gates of Paradise, weeping at beauty

He was not always First Franklin. Before the reportages, before the archives, before the responsibility, he was a child who asked a question no adult could answer: "Why don't we just do the good thing?"

That question never let him go.

He did not work for news agencies. He worked for the dead who no longer make headlines. He collected no prizes. He collected names – of heroes the history books had forgotten.

At some point, he stopped merely documenting. He began to write.

First Franklin is:

· An archivist of the forgotten

· A heretic against the "reasonable"

· A chronicler of the radical present

· And above all: a reader who refused to close the book

He lives nowhere and everywhere. His friends say he never sleeps longer than six hours. His enemies say he is dangerous because he speaks truths that cannot be refuted. He says of himself: "I am a fragment. But fragments can cut."

All his books have been banned in multiple countries. He considers this a compliment.
